A’dai is a Golden Retriever owned by Beiya.
Like every ordinary day, Beiya had to go to work again. She jokingly said that in Suzhou, leaving the bed feels like going far away, and stepping out the door feels like entering a foreign land.
A’dai wagged his tail, his big eyes filled with both anticipation and sadness—perhaps hoping his owner would stay and spend time with him, but also knowing deep down that she couldn’t.
Just then, Beiya’s phone rang. A’dai quickly retracted his paw, which he had just stretched out. “I’m doing fine, don’t worry! Oh, I know, I know. No, I don’t have a dog, really~~” On the other end of the line was Beiya’s mom, who strongly opposed her having a dog. Her reasons were simple: dogs cost money, they make the house smell, and what if her future husband doesn’t like dogs? The list went on.

After hanging up, Beiya crouched down, patted A’dai’s head, and then left, locking the door behind her. That day, as usual, Beiya waited at the bus stop. Next to her stood a man who seemed a little awkward and nervous. It turned out that a button on his Burberry coat was tangled with a piece of pink thread, making him look somewhat ridiculous.
Beiya politely asked if he needed help. The man, though shy, felt he had no other choice and reluctantly let her assist him.
It’s a cliché meet-cute story, but it had a beautiful ending. Beiya and the man fell in love, and soon they were talking about marriage. The man knew about A’dai, but he made it clear that the dog couldn’t be part of their life together. He asked Beiya to give A’dai away. Beiya thought about sending A’dai to her mom’s place, but she had always claimed she didn’t have a dog. Considering her mom’s dislike for dogs, she decided against it.
Beiya picked up her phone, ready to post something on her social media. Suddenly, a wave of guilt washed over her. She had never shared anything about A’dai on her feed. She didn’t even have a single photo with him.
She had never told her friends or family about A’dai’s presence in her life. Her social media was filled with her joys and sorrows, but A’dai was nowhere to be found. All the happy moments she had shared with him were undocumented. Beiya’s nose tingled, and as she closed her eyes, tears began to spill. At first, she sobbed quietly, but soon she was crying uncontrollably. Why? Why hadn’t she posted about A’dai on the first day they were together? Why hadn’t she joyfully announced it to her friends and family? If she had made it public back then, declaring something like “we’ll be together forever,” would she still feel so powerless to resist these pressures now?
On the first day of bringing a pet home, there’s one thing you must do: make it official. If you decide to have a pet, don’t let them down. To you, they may only be a part of your life for a few years, but to them, you are their entire lifetime. If you love them, make it official—announce it to the world with pride!
